The job

The colony had two big propane loads: heating the barns all winter, and drying grain at harvest.

Instead of two separate systems with two fuel piles, both jobs now run off one fuel building and one walking floor.

What we built

  • Two 13 million BTU units side by side, each with our chain grate stoker, which handles wet and mixed chips without jamming.
  • A hot water boiler that heats the barns.
  • A heat source that sends hot air down a duct to the colony's belt grain dryer.
  • One walking floor and auger system that feeds both.
  • Firebox, stokers and controls built in our shop in Headingley, Manitoba.
Both units in one room, with the fuel hopper in front.

On site

Hot air leaves the unit through this duct and goes into the belt grain dryer.

The result

The barns and the grain dryer both run on wood chips from one pile. Fuel cost is about 50% lower than it was on propane.
